A layover is really two problems wearing one name. The short version — 45 minutes, a gate change, a jog through a terminal you have never seen — is a logistics problem. The long version — three, five, eight hours between flights — is a boredom problem with a data bill attached if you are not careful. Both go better with a phone that already has internet the moment the doors open, instead of one hunting for a login page.
Before you land on the first leg
The work happens before you board, not after you land. Three things take five minutes each and save the rest of the day:
- Install the connecting destination’s eSIM before departure, not during the layover. A profile downloads over the internet, and airport Wi-Fi during a short connection is the worst possible moment to discover it will not scan. Do it at home, leave it switched off, and turn it on when you actually need it.
- Add both flights to a tracker, not just the one you are on. If your first leg is delayed, the connecting gate can change or the flight can rebook before you have even landed — worth knowing while you are still in the air on the plane’s own Wi-Fi, if it has any.
- Screenshot the gate map and your boarding pass. Terminal Wi-Fi logins are exactly the kind of thing that fails when you need them most, right as you are trying to find gate C41 with eleven minutes to spare.

The under-60-minutes row is the one worth taking seriously even if it feels unlikely. A short connection assumes everything upstream ran on time, and the one thing airports are consistently bad at is running on time. If the gate changes and you find out from the departure screen rather than a push alert, you have already lost the minute that mattered.
What actually eats the layover
Two things turn a manageable gap into a bad one: not knowing something has changed, and not being able to do anything about it once you do. Using the long layover instead of enduring it
If the gap is long enough to leave the secure zone, three questions decide whether it is worth it: does your visa or entry status allow it, is there enough buffer to clear security again afterward, and do you actually want to. If the answer is no to any of them, a long layover is better spent with a plan than without one — a working connection turns dead time into actual admin: emails cleared, hotel for the next city booked, family told you landed.
